Internal conflicts and insurgencies involving rebel groups have increased drastically over the past century. At the same time, rebel groups are frequently reduced in common discourse to either terrorists, great-power proxies or freedom fighters, depending on one's political situating. The reality, however, is much more complex. Be it social justice exercised by Robin Hood-like bandits in the medieval age, the Sri Lankan Tamil Tiger's fostering of nationalistic sentiment, or the Islamic State’s effort of state-building, rebels emerge out of and partake in a myriad of social phenomena that affect statehood, violence and social life during conflict.

This course thus seeks to understand who violent rebel groups are and what they do. Where in the world are rebels active and how can we classify them? To what extend can we conceptualise rebels as social projects opposed to the state? What is the strategic thinking of rebels? What logic does violence exercised by rebels follow? When and how do rebels govern?

The course is organised as an in-person block seminar. Each class focuses on a specific social phenomenon surrounding rebel groups and is built on engagement with and discussion of key literature in the field.
