Course Contents:
Light-Matter interaction in solid state quantum structures governs applications in our everyday life. Examples are lasers for telecommunication (internet), solar cells, flexible and greener optoelectronics. The lecture will introduce the optical properties of solids and nanostructures used in modern quantum technology applications and research.
 
The lecture will be divided in several topics, each time we introduce the relevant fundamental laws, the material systems and measurement techniques :
 
(1) Introduction to optical processes and materials
(2) Energy bands, light absorption and emission
(3) Quantum confinement : 2D Materials for telecommunication and Quantum technologies
(4) Solid State Quantum Emitters
(5) Confinement of light in nanostructures
(6) Nonlinear optics in nanostructures

The objectives of the lecture are that the participants :
-       learn the main physical principles of ligh- matter-interaction in solid state nanostructures such as semiconductors in 2D, 1D and 0D.
-       know a variety of material systems used in photonics experiments and applications
-       can decide which experiment is best to study a chosen characteristic in solid state photonics
-       learn about open question in solid state photonics research and development

 
It is assumed that the participants have already attended the following lectures :
·      Introduction to Optics
·      Introduction to Quantum Mechanics
·      Introduction to solid state physics
