Course Description:
This course is designed for students whose second ‘mother tongue’ is German, but who have grown up in a home using a different first language than German. The aim of the course is to help students polish their German skills at an academic, scientific level.
In order to make good use of limited time, the course content will be presented in an autonomous, semi-guided learning format.
Attendance in this blended-learning course will only be required every other week. During on-line phases students will work with the Moodle Platform, also maintaining contact with the instructor. This will give students the opportunity improve their academic, scientific German at their own individual pace, independent of time or place. Students will work under supervision with scientific, university-relevant themes and text types, including written practise of text formats that are important in academic contexts, such as exposés, abstracts and summaries. We will also look at linguistic features of these texts, such as academic, professional language versus colloquial, everyday language and structures that are common to academic, scientific texts. Successful completion of the course entails either handing in a portfolio or holding a presentation.
Literature:
Material will be made available for a small fee.
Preconditions:
Ideally students will already be in the process of planning or writing a scientific project, paper or thesis.
Students whose mother tongue is not German must have a minimum of 80 points on the placement test.
Be aware that this is NOT a language learning course.
